Will The City Or Country Animal Services Help Me With A Skunk Issue? If you find yourself unlucky enough to be on the receiving end of a skunk issue, it can be a real nightmare. These nocturnal animals can make a lot of night time noise, can damage your garden, eat your trash and leave a nasty smell everywhere that they go.

There is also the risk of rabies – which makes the animals a lot more dangerous. Generally skunks are docile creatures that will only use their anal scent glands emitting the awful smell that they are so famous for, when they sense a real threat to their – or their children’s – lives. If a skunk is infected with rabies, it will behave very differently. There are some ways that you’ll be able to tell if a skunk has this disease.

If the skunk is unkempt, dirty looking and uncoordinated, then it may well be ill. If the skunk is wandering aimlessly, acting ‘drunk’ and unbothered if a dog approaches it, then it is likely that it has rabies.

When skunks are infected, there is more chance of them biting you. It is highly unlikely that the animal services in your area will help you with a skunk problem for free – even if the skunk does have rabies. A long time ago, this was a common occurrence, but the issue became much too big and much too expensive for the Government to fund.

All these wildlife issues now are the responsibility of the private sector – that means wildlife patrols and pest services with the correct licences must be hired to assist you with your skunk issue.

There are hundreds of available companies to help you do this, so it’s very unlikely that you won’t be able to find anyone in your area. A general cost for this service will be somewhere in the region of $150. Hiring a service like this could be beneficial to you because these people know exactly what they are doing, the precautions that they need to take and the equipment that will keep them protected. Even if the skunk in question is ill, they will know exactly what needs to happen to keep everyone involved safe.

Of course, if you don’t want to do this, you can choose to get rid of skunks yourself. You can protect your yard by keeping your garbage cans locked away and your garden lit up or you can trap any skunks that have taken up residence and become a pest for you. Getting rid of the skunk yourself holds a larger risk, but may result in a smaller cost. Just make sure that you protect yourself when doing this, and it is advisable not to go anywhere near the skunk yourself if it is suffering from the rabies virus.
